Sum was born Dec. 13, 1929, in New York, the son of A. Sumner Gambee ’24 and Eleanor Brown Gambee, and the nephew of Randolph Brown ’20.  

He prepared at Phillips Exeter. At Princeton he was a history major and active on varsity crew, the Nassau Sovereign, and Orange Key, and joined Cap and Gown. He roomed with Fletcher Harper and Pete Hager. After OCS he served for three years as a lieutenant in naval intelligence. Sum and Nancy Broderick were married in Honolulu May 29, 1953.

His working years were spent in university administration. From 1968 to 1987 he was dean of student affairs and coordinator of student financial aid for the California state university and college system. Previously he had been with the University of Pittsburgh and RPI in admissions.

Sum and his wife were active for years in Holy Trinity Catholic Church and numerous civic organizations in San Pedro, Calif. In retirement they continued to be driving forces in community human services.  

Sum died March 18, 2010, in California. He is survived by Nancy; their son, Stephen; his brothers, Craig and Robert ’64; sister Fay; and cousin Randolph Brown ’54. His son, David, predeceased him.
