Andrew Ostrom died peacefully May 5, 2011. He had had two cerebral hemorrhages that disabled him totally for the last three years of his life. He also was completely blind for the past two years.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y., he attended Nott Terrace High School there. At Princeton, he majored in chemistry and was a member of Campus Club. He was active in the Chapel Choir, the Varsity Glee Club, and the Pre-Medical Society. He also served as a football manager.
After Princeton, Andy graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and interned at Tufts University. He began training in ophthalmology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed two years at the New York Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Program.
Starting in 1962, Andy served two years in the Air Force. On discharge, he established a practice of ophthalmology in Schenectady. He held positions with the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Ophthalmology and Eastern New York Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Gladys; sons Daniel, John, Mark, and Matthew; daughter Katherine; his sister, Margaret; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The class extends condolences to his wife and family.
