As Hurricane Irene approached, Princeton’s rowing coaches raised equipment at the Boathouse at least three feet above floor level, a foot above the previous high-water mark. Still, four feet of muddy water from Lake Carnegie soaked the ground floor, damaging boats, electrical equipment, and the docks.

Volunteers from the Carnegie Lake Rowing Association pitched in as the Princeton coaches cleaned up. “We feel really lucky to have a community like that,” said men’s heavyweight crew coach Greg Hughes ’96. Repairs began shortly after the cleanup, and the crews were back on the water for the first day of fall practice Sept. 15.
