Carl “Mac” Campbell died June 26, 2011, surrounded by his family.

Born in Hagerstown, Md., he attended George School in Newtown, Pa. At Princeton, he majored in engineering and became active in the Princeton Evangelical Fellowship. After graduation, he spent a year at a theological seminary and then returned to Princeton to earn a master’s degree in electrical engineering.

Mac joined Burroughs Corp., and while working for them in Philadelphia, married Janet Allen. In 1976, he became a consultant in electronic security for financial systems, working for MasterCard and Visa. He produced an application of cryptography for protection of financial messaging systems to securely handle PINs and played a major role in the development of national and international standards for protecting financial data currently in use throughout the world. Through his own company, Mac designed and produced security modules to protect data transfer for banking systems. He received numerous patents for his inventions.

He remained active in the Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and the Merion (Pa.) Cricket Club. We send our condolences to his wife, Janet; his sons, Carl *88, Scott, and Jeff '87; and eight grandchildren.
