Born in Washington, D.C., he attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. He was a biology major, and a member of Quadrangle, the Pre-Med Society, and the St. Paul’s Society. After serving two years in the Navy, he graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1960. While in medical school, he married Mary Jane Stoll in 1959.

Dave completed residency training at the University of Virginia that included two years of surgery followed by three years of pathology to become board certified in forensic pathology. He then attended and graduated from the UVA’s School of Law and passed the Virginia state bar.

He served 21 years as Virginia's chief medical examiner and conducted the nation’s first successful DNA-based prosecution for capital crimes. He retired in 1993 after suffering a stroke. During his distinguished career, he also taught at the Medical College of Virginia and the FBI, and was on the board of the American Board of Forensic Medicine.

We send our condolences to Mary Jane, his son, James; daughters Caroline and Janet; and seven grandchildren.
