Various recent headlines regarding our nation’s ignoble story of slavery and human bondage temper the Sept. 14 “From PAW’s Pages” feature about the elephants who led the ’44 P-rade. George Hamid Jr. ’40’s note about the market price of “his” elephants suggests something grossly misguided in the approach of all humanity toward neighboring species. I will be scolded for my comment, but a few will see the obvious parallels. We have far to go, if we are allowed ever even to get there.
