In Response to: Scott R. Chubb ’75

Scott was one of my best friends at SUNY Stony Brook, where we were both in the same class in the Department of Physics, earning our Ph.D.s.

We shared a house in East Setauket, Long Island, as grad students. We shared a general grad student office with our own modular cubicles. As this was before the second general gas and energy crises, the cubicle walls went up like 8 feet high. One day before class, I played a prank on Scott whereby I inserted a modular partition perfectly where the open doorway to his cubicle was, thereby effectively boarding up his cubicle so he couldn’t get into his office. He went back and forth knowing his office had to be there, but seeing there was no opening for him to go in before class. He took in stride and laughed with his thunderous voice.

During weekends in fall we would drive to the famous Columbia–Princeton football games where Columbia invariably lost! Loved it.

I was in Punta Arenas, Chile, sightseeing at a cemetery at the very moment Scott must have been passing from our world, and for some reason, I don’t know, felt very weird at the moment.

I miss my friend. Love, joy, and happiness fill your spirit, Scott!

Fondly,
