Five people received honorary degrees at Commencement. They are: 

Fazle Hasan Abed, the founder of BRAC, an organization that for four decades has worked to alleviate poverty for millions of people in 11 countries;

former U.S. secretary of state Madeleine Albright, who served under President Bill Clinton and was the first woman to hold the position; 

Herb Kelleher, a Camden, N.J., native who co-founded Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest low-cost carrier; 

professor emeritus James McPherson, a member of Princeton’s faculty for 42 years and the nation’s most highly regarded scholar of the Civil War;

and James West, an inventor and educator who revolutionized the telephone and recording industries during a 40-year tenure at Bell Laboratories and is known for advocating increased diversity in science and technology.
