JAMES WALLACE GIVENS JR., wellknown mathematician and pioneer in the field of computer science died Mar, 5, 1993, at 82. Born in Alberene, Va., he was awarded his bachelor's degree at age 17 (in 1927) by Lynchburg College, his master's degree from the Univ. of Virginia, and his doctorate in mathematics from Princeton. During his studies at Princeton, he worked also at the Institute for Advanced Study as assistant to Professor Oswald Veblen. Early in his career, he worked with the UNIVAC at N.Y.U and later with ORACLE at Oak Ridge Natl. Laboratories. His career included teaching at the Univ. of Tennessee, Wayne State Univ., and Northwester Univ., before his appointment in 1960 as senior scientist at Argonne Natl. Laboratories near Chicago. He was widely honored both in the U.S. and Europe. He is survived by his former wife, Virginia; sons James, Brian, and Shelton; and four grandchildren, to whom we wish to express condolences on his passing.
