Paul Trescott, retired professor of economics at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, died peacefully Feb. 8, 2018. He was 92.

Trescott was a decorated Army officer in World War II. In 1949, he graduated from Swarthmore College, and in 1954 earned a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton. From 1954 to 1967, he was on the faculty of Kenyon College.

He was then on the faculties of Thammasat University in Bangkok, Miami University of Ohio, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and SIUC, from which he retired in 2000.

During a 1983-1984 sabbatical under a Fulbright award, he was at Peking University, traveling throughout China giving lectures. Over the next 20 years he returned to China six times to lecture and teach economics. He played a key role in exchanges between SIUC and Northwest Normal University of China.

As an active member of the U.S.-China Peoples Friendship Association, he received its highest award at its 1999 national convention. A prolific author of more than 100 articles, his most recent book was published in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, whom he married in 1982; two children; one stepdaughter; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A son predeceased him.
