Martin Shubik, the Seymour H. Knox Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Institutional Economics at the Yale School of Management, died Aug. 22, 2018, at the age of 92.

Shubik graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in 1947 and 1949, respectively. He earned a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton in 1953. After Princeton he was at General Electric for four years and then joined IBM Research Labs before he went to Yale in 1963 as a professor of the economics of organization.

Shubik was director of the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics from 1973 to 1976, and was one of the founding faculty members of the Yale School of Management. He taught economics, game theory, and investment theory and practice. Named the Knox Professor in 1975, he held that chair through to his retirement in 2007.

Even in retirement he published papers on economics, defense, and other topics, compiling a life’s total of 22 books and 340 articles. Much honored for his research in theoretical and practical aspects of economics, he was a highly valued colleague until his passing.

Shubik was survived by Julie, his wife (who died Oct. 18, 2018); a daughter; and two grandsons.
