Greg came to Princeton from East High School in Cheyenne, Wyo., where he excelled at mathematics, running, and playing the fiddle. He majored in physics, lived in a large suite in Wilson College, and joined Cap and Gown. After graduation Greg earned a Ph.D. at Rockefeller University, working at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

During his career in academe, he founded the modern high-energy physics group at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was promoted to full professor in 2008. He also helped establish the Cosmic Ray Observatory Project in Nebraska high schools and was a leader of education, outreach, and public relations for the Pierre Auger Project in Argentina. Greg made a significant contribution to the field of particle physics. He was a contributing member of collaborations that made key discoveries, including the search for the Higgs boson particle. The discovery led to theorists being awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize.

The class extends sympathy to his wife, Graciela Acedo; and his son, Everett Gutzmer.
