George died Nov. 27, 2019, after a long struggle with congestive heart failure.

Born in Scarsdale, N.Y., he came to us from Andover Academy. At Princeton he majored in economics, ate at Ivy, and was in the Outing Club and WPRB. He took only three years to graduate, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in economics at Harvard.

He then followed an academic career at Dartmouth College, Temple University, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and finally as vice chancellor of the public university system in Chicago. After retiring in 1998 he and Joan moved to Wilmington, N.C., where he indulged his love of sailing and cruising the East Coast, the Caribbean, and Europe. Wanting to give back, he was an active volunteer for a number of local charities in Wilmington, including Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Bellamy Mansion, and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, a food-distribution center.

George is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joan; two sons, the Rev. Bruce Handy and Scott Handy and their families; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, including Jeff Pidot ’69.
