Syd died Oct. 19, 2022, at his home in Battles Wharf, Ala., on Mobile Bay, the place he grew to love as a teenager from Maryland. He was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Washington, D.C., and his family vacationed in Point Clear. Syd made it his goal to live near there.

Before Princeton, he attended the Landon School in Bethesda, Md., where he captained the football and baseball teams and was a member of the student council. At Princeton, he majored in economics and joined Cannon Club, where he was chair of the bicker committee.

Syd served two years in the Army and then graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law. He then moved to Mobile and joined the Inge Twitty law firm, embarking on a 40-year practice that focused on litigation defense.

Syd loved fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and playing golf. He served as president of the Country Club of Mobile, where he played a key role in renovating the facility. He was also the president of the Order of Myths, the oldest mystic society to celebrate Mardi Gras in Mobile.
