J. GORDON STIPE Jr., aged 74, a professor of geophysics, died Mar. 17, 1988, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Oxford, Ga., Jan. 1, 1914. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in electrical engineering, both at Emory Univ., and a master's degree in physics at the Univ. of Chicago At Princeton he earned a doctor of philosophy degree in physics. Dr. Stine consulted for the Manhattan Project; taught for one year at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa.; relocated to Lynchburg, Va., at Randolph Macon Women's College; and succeeded there to the chairmanship of physics and a full professorship in astronomy. In 1966 he joined the faculty of the physics department at Boston Univ., where he remained until retirement in 1977. He authored a textbook and several "videoloops" for rapid instruction of medical Students in the physical sciences. He is survived by his widow, Elma MacMurray Stipe, a daughter born in 1945, and a son born in 1947.
