Vernon Dixon, who had been the Merit Professor of Economics at Haverford College, died April 23, 2011. He was 78.

In 1954, Dixon received a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College, and in 1955 earned a master’s degree from Columbia. He did additional graduate study at Fordham University. From Princeton, he received a master’s degree in 1969 and then in 1973 a Ph.D. in economics.

Dixon taught at Haverford from 1971 to 2006. One of his specialties was the economic development of urban black communities. He was a member of the Association of Black Princeton Alumni.

He is survived by his wife, Ursula Dixon.
