An American diplomat and author of the Cold War containment doctrine, George F. Kennan ’25, who died in 2005, kept a diary for much of his life. Entries in The Kennan Diaries (W.W. Norton), edited by Frank Costigliola, contain Kennan’s political commentary, and describe his despair for capitalism in the midst of the Depression and his grief over the death of his mother, among other things.
