Piping The Earth

(Ravello Records) The title of this orchestral album by Judith Shatin *79 is from an ancient Chinese text, referencing the dual nature of wind — its myriad sounds as it travels across the earth, and its underlying intransience. This one-movement titular piece analogously flows from one sound space to another, while keeping a constant harmonic background; the three other pieces on the CD combine Shatin’s inventive approach to sound with a strong sense of musicianship. Shatin is a composer and sound artist, whose music has been commissioned by numerous organizations.
