Surviving Field Research: Working in Violent and Difficult Situations

(Routledge) Recent decades have seen a vast increase in the number of academics and researchers seeking to analyze the causes of, and offer responses to, mass atrocities such as genocide, war crimes, and other human rights violations. This volume explores the practical and ethical challenges of research into serious abuses and of dealing with vulnerable populations. It aims to guide researchers in addressing the challenges of qualitative fieldwork under difficult circumstances, such as conducting research in autocratic regimes and working with reluctant respondents. Chandra Lekha Sriram is a professor of human rights and director of the Centre on Human Rights in Conflict at the School of Law, University of East London, United Kingdom.
