RANDY DIED on Jan. 7, 1992, after a long and courageous fight against a cancerlike disease, for which he had been receiving chemotherapy since 1972.

Randy was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Chevy Chase, Md., spending part of each summer in Lincolnville, Me. He entered Princeton from Suffield Academy, where he served as class president and graduated at the top of his class, At Princeton he majored in history, played on the J. V. hockey team, and was a member of ivy club.

During the summer following his sophomore year, Randy worked in the civil rights movement in the south, a lifelong concern to him, along with environmental matters. He took a leave of absence during his junior year and lived in Alaska, He then returned to Princeton in the fall of 1971 and again in the fall of 1972, but had to withdraw each year because of his illness. In 1973 he studied metalcraft and worked in Same Fe. He then moved to Maine, practicing his art and working as a tool-maker and welder.

In 1980, Randy married Iris Blackmer and reentered Princeton, completing his thesis and graduating in 1981. He worked on the editorial staff of READERS DIGEST for five years, before starting a successful business with his wife, implementing promotional contests for consumer marketing programs.

Friends were inspired by Randy, noting that he confronted his illness matteroffactly, never complaining, adjusting to a succession of losses, and maintaining a dry humor and upbeat, competitive spirit. Living on the edge, he was exacting in his expectations, always setting goals and, against the odds, achieving them.
