I am the friend that Aida “leaned on” at Princeton; my name is Daphne. We met in the summer before the rest of the students had arrived on campus in 1973. We were the experiment of inner city children from New Jersey, attending Princeton University. I am an AfroAmerican from Newark, and a “sister” to Aida, a Puerto Rican from Trenton. As comrades in the major of sociology and Teacher Prep, we studied and experienced both sexism and racism. At the time, this suffering came from both instructors and classmates. However, as best friends and “Tigers,” we persisted, graduated, and succeeded together!
