Bruce Reed ’82, who has served as Vice President Joe Biden’s chief of staff since 2011, announced last week that he is leaving the Obama administration to become president of the Los Angeles-based Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, an education nonprofit devoted to improving urban public schools.
Reed was a key negotiator in a series of budget talks with Congressional Republicans, according to The Washington Post, and helped steer Biden’s effort to strengthen gun-control laws in the months after the Sandy Hook tragedy. Biden said he will “long be grateful for Bruce’s ideas and wisdom,” according to The Los Angeles Times.
In addition to working with Biden, Reed served on the staff of then-Sen. Al Gore in the 1980s, spent eight years as a policy adviser for President Bill Clinton, led the Democratic Leadership Council, and co-authored The Plan: Big Ideas for America, with Rahm Emanuel. Before entering politics, Reed was a Rhodes Scholar.
Eli Broad, founder and chairman of the Broad Foundation, said in a release that Reed’s “strategic insights, energy and passion for elevating education to a national priority make him an ideal partner in our work.”
