Andrew Jay Gratz ’83

ANDY GRATZ passed away June 7, 1993, after a long battle with cancer. He leaves his widow, Sylvia Anita; his parents; his brother David; and his sisters JoAnn and Marjorie. While at Princeton, Andy majored in geology and was a member of Charter. After graduation, he was awarded a Fulbright grant to Vienna to continue his research on shock deformation. He then returned to U.C.L.A., completed his doctorate, and landed at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics in Livermore, Calif., as a post-doctorate fellow. Andy's colleagues have spoken of his passion for his work, and of his groundbreaking research in and analysis of crystals, In his last five years, he published 12 major papers, leaving a lasting impact not only on his coworkers, but on the field of geology. The class joins Andy's family in mourning.
