Dave graduated from the Webb School in Claremont, Calif., where he was the senior class president. At Princeton he majored in mechanical engineering, ran track, and joined Cap (undergraduate trustee) as well as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Pacific Coast Club. His roommates were Stokes Carrigan, George McNelis, and Herb Henderson.

Dave worked at Douglas Aircraft until 1960, when he followed his father, Howard Hawks, into motion-picture and television production as an assistant director and production manager, including for the last eight years of M*A*S*H.

Dave died Sept. 24, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hadfield-Hawks; and his daughters, Darren and Jessica. The class offers its best upon the loss of their dad, our brother.
