E. Avery McCarthy ’31

Body

Ave McCarthy, who had been quite ill for several years, died on Feb. 7, 1989, in Pasadena, Calif. After graduation, Ave returned to California and began work for the McCarthy Co., a real-estate company that his grandfather had founded. He later became its president and chairman of the board.

Ave married Kate Arnold Dana in 1933, thereby acquiring two Princeton relatives—his wife's father (Class of 1903) and her cousin Marshall Dana '32.  Although Ave shared major reunions with us early on, we regret that we did not see more of him later. He was fortunate that circumstances gave him and his wife the opportunity to travel to many countries in Europe and North Africa and among the Pacific islands. In addition to travel, he found relaxation in horseback riding and fishing.

Surviving Ave are his widow, "Arn"; a son, E. Avery III; sisters-in-law Barbara M. McCarthy and Adelaide Parker; a brother-in law, Abney Dana; and a granddaughter, Kathleen M. Bruton. We express to them our deepest sympathy in their loss.
