FRITZ OTTO HAAS, formerly president and C.E.O. of Rohm and Haas Chemical Co., died at home in Ambler, Penn., Jan. 2, l994. He was 78. A native of the Philadelphia area, Dr. Haas got his Ph.D. in chemistry. In 1940, he joined Rohm and Haas (which had been founded in 1909 by his father, Otto). During WWII, Dr. Haas served in the navy. He returned to the company in 1946, and succeeded to the presidency after his father died in 1960. He served as president until 1970 and remained on the board until he retired, in 1984. His community activities included the Philadelphia Historic Preservation Corp., the American Philosophical Society, and the German Society of Philadelphia. Dr. Haas's first wife, Dorothy, and daughter Martha Ellen predeceased him. He is survived by his second wife, Carole Fenimore; sons John Otto, William David, and Thomas Willaman; his brother; two stepsons; and eight grandchildren. To all his family, we extend sincere sympathy in their loss.
