H. Jeffrey Leonard *85
Jeffrey Leonard, president and CEO of the Global Environment Fund (GEF), an alternative-asset manager, died suddenly Oct. 13, 2018, at age 64.
Leonard graduated from Harvard in 1976 and earned a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics in 1977. He earned a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton in 1985. He wrote five books and many articles on global environmental issues, international trade, energy production, and technology development.
In 1990, he founded GEF “to invest globally in high-growth clean-energy sources and efficient, environmentally sustainable businesses.” At his death, he was also treasurer and senior fellow in global studies of the New America Foundation and chair emeritus of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (which promotes private equity and capital investment).
Leonard generously supported many local community and cultural organizations. He was a founding board member of the National Council for Science and the Environment and a member of the Hydrogen Technical Advisory Board.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carolyn; three children (including Anna ’10); and his father, George.
