MIKE MADDEN died of metastatic malignant melanoma on Feb. 16, 1992, in Dumfries, Va.

Born Feb. 7, 1939, in Ottumwa, Iowa, Mike prepared for Princeton at Phillips Exeter Academy, graduating with honors. At Princeton, he majored in Oriental studies, graduated magna cum laude, and was a member of the Glee Club. Mike was a familiar campus figure in blue on Thursdays in his Air Force ROTC uniform. A member of Court Club, he roomed senior year with Eric Christofferson and John Loverro '62.

Following Princeton, Mike spent five years on active duty in the Air Force and remained in the reserves thereafter, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Following three years in banking, he returned to school, acquiring master's degrees at the Univ. of Washington in Near Eastern language and literature and in library science. He joined Firestone Library in 1976, leaving in 1979 to become Middle East reference librarian at the Defense Intelligence Agency Library. In 1981 he became an intelligence analyst at D.I.A.

Mike is survived by his daughter Laura, son Brooks, his mother Sue C. Madden, and his brothers Patrick and Tim. We join them in mourning his passing.
