Timothy Edwin McGinty ’83

TIM MCGINTY died Aug. 3, 1992, after a fiveyear battle with AIDS. He was 31 years old.

Tim came to Princeton from Pine Crest Prep School in Ft. Lauderdale, where he was an AllStar football player, Nail. Forensic Society champion, and founder of a chapter ofT eenAge Republicans. At Princeton, he was active at the Aquinas Institute, was a member of Dial Lodge, and graduated from the Woodrow Wilson School. While at Columbia Law School, he was senior editor of the LAW REVIEW.

After graduating from law school in 1987, Tim became an associate at Christy & Viener in New York. Shortly thereafter he learned that he was H.LV. positive. Tim became active in AIDS education. Initially, he told his story in private high schools and colleges in N.Y.C. and Florida, speaking frankly about his long struggle to accept his sexuality and his fight with AIDS. Working through the HetrickMartin Institute for the education and protection of lesbian and gay youth, Tim began to speak at public schools as well. He was able to reach a national audience through his appearance on HIV: THE TEST OF TIME, a documentary aired on the Lifetime Cable channel in 1990. Tim was also active in the New York chapter of Dignity, a national organization for gay and lesbian Catholics, and was awarded the Gormley Award, the organization's highest award for service to Dignity and to the gay and lesbian community Tim will be remembered for his courage, his humanity, and his spirituality. His memory will be treasured by those who loved him. Tim is survived by his parents, Patricia and Denton; a brother, Michael; a sister, Theresa Ann Collier; and his longtime companion, Steven Carlin. To all of them, the Class extends its deepest sympathy.
