Wilbur A. Smith ’49

Body

Wib died April 9, 2016, at Kendal, a retirement community in Granville, Ohio. He had lived in the Columbus area for many years.

Wib came to Princeton in July 1946 after a brief stint in the Navy. He joined Elm Club, majored in economics, and left without graduating. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1951 and earned another degree from Ohio State University in 1956. He spent the next 30 years associated with Battelle Memorial Institute, the research-technology organization.

Our records indicate very little contact with Wib since he left Princeton, but he kept his name and address on file with us over the years. He was active in the affairs of Columbus Academy, his alma mater; was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Castalia Trout Club; and was on the board of Ohio State University Harding Hospital. He also served on the Jefferson Township zoning commission, was a blood donor, and joined the Blackcats.

He was predeceased by his wife, Louise. He is survived by his children, Marcia, David, and Diane; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. We offer our condolences to Wib’s family.
