WILLIAM G. PIERCE DIED Jan. 1, 1994. in San Francisco. He was 89. A native of South Dakota, he received his undergraduate degree from the Univ. of South Dakota in 1927 and got his Ph.D. at Princeton in geology.

He was a geologist with the federal government for over 60 years. He began working for the U.S. Geological Survey in 1927, studying fuel resources in the Rockies and the Midwest. In 1965, he was presented the Distinguished Service Award from the U.S. Dept. of the Interior.

He is survived by his widow, May Bell; sons William and Kenneth: and daughter Diane Phillips. We extend our condolences to family and friends.
