Thank you for the information regarding my grandfather Howard W. Stepp. He was quite humble; I remember they wanted to name the new swimming pool after him and he declined instead it was named after one of his students. We were a family of swimmers. My grandmother Dorothy Stepp was also a swimmer, my father, Howard Jr., was a swimmer at North Carolina, and I swam with my grandfather many summers on Island Beach in the Atlantic, as well as in high school, then on to other things.

During his award ceremony they held, we were quite surprised at all of what he’d accomplished because he really never discussed much beyond his love of swimming, his fondness of words, and the friends he made along the way. He is missed, and it’s nice that over 30 years later he is still remembered!

With Regards,
