THE CLASS and Princeton lost a loyal member with the death of Ty Cobb Aug. 8, 1991, after a threemonth battle with leukemia. He retired in 1978 as V.P. for corporate markets of American Can Co., with whom he spent his entire business career.
Ty majored in history. He played varsity soccer, was manager of the lacrosse team, and belonged to Colonial Club. He joined American Can after graduation. His wartime service was as navigator on a Navy tug doing combat salvage in both the Atlantic and Pacific, for which he received a presidential unit citation. By 1968 he was national accounts executive of American Can and then was made C.E.O. and president of its British subsidiary. In 1971 he headed the Canadian branch, and in 1975 he returned to Greenwich, Conn., as corporate V.P.
An elder of Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, N.Y., Ty was for 12 years vicechairman of the Chaplains Committee in Washington, D.C. He was a former president of the P.C. of Rochester, and, from 1985 to 1991, he was its treasurer and was Class V.P. for upstate N.Y. He leaves his widow, Ann; a daughter, Cathy; and sons Tyler Jr. and William. We join them in their great loss.
