This is undoubtedly a very interesting and important study. The emphasis has always been on the saved, who were usually the famous; the less than famous became the damned. This duality reminds me of all the news about Jewish families claiming their seized paintings, other valuables, and properties seized by the Nazis or their collaborators while the millions who had nothing valuable to be seized are forgotten and ignored: people whose only seized valuables were often their gold teeth, extracted after they had been shot or gassed, sometimes even before that final event. We are fascinated with celebrity, but celebrity is only a very small part of the tragedy we behold, or refuse to behold.
