Alex represented Alabama at the 1924 Boy Scout Jamboree in Denmark. He graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1928. At Princeton, he was a member of Cloister Inn and majored in history. He received a law degree from Harvard in 1935 and began practicing that year. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps.
In 1948, he was elected judge of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, where he served until his retirement in 1976. Alex was known for his fair treatment of those who appeared in his court and for his support of young lawyers.
He is remembered for his love of people, curiosity, keen intellect, and long-standing interest in geography, politics, and history.
Alex was preceded in death by his wives, Frances McMillan Marks and Jean Elder Mitchell Marks. He is survived by his daughters, Frances Marks Bruton and Julia Marks Young; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. We offer them our sincere sympathy.
