Investing in the Country's Future

I read Bill Hewitt’s letter in the April PAW with interest and have a response.

Federal funding represents an investment by the people of this country. When they fund a university, it can be seen like any other wise investment. Firstly, a good investment will have a diversity of security equivalents to provide a balanced portfolio to protect against market swings. Secondly, it will have an equitable allocation in that portfolio so that all recipients have similar ability to affect the investment's performance. Finally, the investment of the people needs to be inclusive, so as not to leave out any gems that might increase the long term value of the money put in. In the case of a university, the investment is to hopefully produce a group of graduates who can contribute to the betterment of the world around them and the lives lived in it.

Princeton does precisely this, and it does not violate any law. It may, however, counter any political attempt to force a political ideology on its programs and students. More power to that.
