Carroll Sprigg ’60

Carroll was born Nov. 8, 1938, in Dayton, Ohio, to John Sprigg, and Jeanette Emmons Sprigg. He had a younger sister, Louise, and an older brother, Joseph.

Carroll prepared for Princeton at Phillips Andover, where he played football, was a member of the mathematics club, and was active in various singing and theatrical groups.

At Princeton, Carroll was a research assistant in the Cosmic Ray Lab, and participated in the automobile, flying and skydiving clubs. He was a member of Cottage Club, and roomed during his junior and senior years with Walt Smyth and Belden Frease in 1879 Hall.

Carroll had a lifelong interest in flying and aspired to be a test pilot. He was a member of Air Force ROTC, receiving a commission on graduation and assignment to basic flight-school training. He previously had been hired as an operations trainee at ARMCO Steel Corp.’s Baltimore Works and granted a leave of absence

After assignment to Laredo (Texas) Air Force Base for flight training, where he became engaged, he was reassigned to Luke AFB in Arizona. He was tragically killed in a training exercise when he crashed into a mountain on Aug. 23, 1962, days before his wedding.
