John Burr Clevenger ’41

John died Nov. 6, 2008, after a short illness in the hospital. He had lived in Carolina Shores, N.C., for the past 23 years.  

John prepared at the Hun School. At Princeton he was a member of Cannon Club.

Joining the Army in August 1941, he attended OCS and was commissioned in the infantry in 1942. John went overseas with the 83rd Division and was assigned to the 331st infantry, which landed on Omaha Beach. He earned five battle stars, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart before being separated as a first lieutenant in 1945.

John’s first job was with Bamberger’s, but then he moved to National Cash Register. He later went out on his own as a distributor of office products in Perth Amboy, N.J. He also managed a Jersey shore office for Harris Upham for several years before joining Fahnstock & Co. as an account executive.

Retiring in 1984, John built his new home bordering the fairway of Carolina Shores Golf Course in Calabash.

John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Gilmartin Clevenger; his daughter, Jane Gilmartin; and four grandsons. He was predeceased by his son, John Jr.
