Michael R. Lutz ’64

Michael died July 11, 2009, of metastatic uveal melanoma, at home in Deerfield, Ill., surrounded by family and friends. He was 67.

Michael, a Chicagoan who attended Amundsen High School, majored in history at Princeton and belonged to Elm Club. He received an M.B.A. from Chicago in 1966.  

Mike joined his family’s finance company, Nationwide Acceptance Corp., in which he remained active until his death. He was also chairman of Illinois Founders Insurance, a business he owned for 30 years.  

His philanthropic work focused on the Young Men’s Jewish Council (renamed Jewish Council for Youth Services), of which he was a leader and benefactor until he died. The Lutz family foundation that Michael established with Karyn, his wife of 45 years, supports the George W. Lutz Family Center, named for Michael’s father, and the Lillian L. Lutz Recreation Center, named for his mother. The centers provide numerous programs for children in suburban Chicago.  

Michael golfed frequently, and he and Karyn played duplicate bridge often. In this and other ways, they formed a strong partnership. Michael’s gentle intelligence enriched many lives, and his generosity enriched his community. He leaves a proud legacy.  

In addition to Karyn, Michael is survived by daughter Amy, son Jonathan, and five grandchildren.
