Richard Charles Griggs ’48

He graduated from Princeton High School and earned his bachelor’s degree with honors in economics in 1947. His initial employment was with the University in the office of the controller. He began his career in academia in 1952 as a teacher of mathematics at Princeton Country Day School.

Dick’s life was devoted to various aspects of education. He served the Barstow School in Kansas City, Mo., and East Woods School in Oyster Bay, N.Y., on his way to joining Abbot Academy in Andover, Mass., as business manager. When Abbot and Phillips Academy merged in 1975, he stayed on with Andover in various capacities until retiring in 1981. In 1978 he created a parent-loan plan for those whose incomes did not qualify for any other form of aid. He helped over 50 schools establish parent-loan programs.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Helen. He is survived by his sons, Bob and Jeff; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
