Robert L. McLean ’52

Bob McLean died March 22, 2011, at his home in New York City.

A native of Bronxville, N.Y., he was active in student government and publications at Roosevelt High School. At Princeton he worked in Commons, managed the golf team, was an officer in Orange Key, and took his meals in Charter Club. He graduated with a degree in engineering.

Commissioned a second lieutenant at graduation, his first Army assignment was as a guided-missile officer at Fort Bliss, Texas, and White Sands, N.M. Afterward he returned to Princeton and the Forrestal Research Center, where he eventually was in charge of its stellerator experiment. Seeking a career change, he earned an M.B.A. from New York University in 1964 and moved to Manhattan and eventually to Wall Street, where he was an institutional investor until his retirement in 1994.

Bob stayed in the Army Reserve, rising to the rank of colonel and receiving the Legion of Merit after 33 years of service. He was president of the Squadron A Association, a governor of the Association of the U.S. Army, and founder and first president of the Alumni and Friends of Princeton ROTC.

Bob is survived by his wife, Linda Durfee McLean; his daughters, Elissa and Maggie; and three grandchildren, with whom we share their loss.
