Thomas A. Farr ’54

Tom Farr died June 2, 2010. Although slowed by a stroke and a heart attack, he remained active to the end.  

Born in New York City, he graduated from Pomfret School. At Princeton, he was a Modern Languages major and a member of the Glee Club and Colonial Club. He left college in 1955 to serve in the Army in Greenland and then in the Air Force Reserve until 1957. After his tour of duty, he graduated with the Class of 1957.  

His career began with IBM and a seat on the New York Stock Exchange for many years. He retired in 1986 and moved to Beaufort, S.C., where he became a financial adviser with Merrill Lynch.  

Tom was an accomplished singer with the Colorado Festival Chorus, the Harbormasters Barbershop, and the Low Country Chorale. He was active in the Rotary Club of Beaufort and St. Helen’s Episcopal Church, and was co-founder of the Farside Investment Club.  

His Princeton relations included his father, F. Shelton Farr 1913; his grandfather, John Farr 1879; and Joe Hewitt 1907, who co-wrote “The Princeton Cannon Song,” the grandfather of Tom’s first wife, Regis Paine; and Jack Livingston 1929, father of Tom’s wife, Terry.  

The class extends sympathy to Terry, Tom’s wife of 28 years; sons Thomas II, Kenneth, and Edward; stepchildren Cynthia Ziegler and Peter Lawrence; and eight grandchildren.
