John died Nov. 6, 2025, in Centreville, Va.

He came to us from Woodberry Forest School to study philosophy and eat at Key and Seal Club. He was on the Yacht Club Racing Team and stayed at Princeton to earn a master’s degree in 1957 and a Ph.D. in 1959 in philosophy.

After a brief stint teaching at Washington State, he returned east in 1963 to the University of Maryland at College Park and had a long teaching career there. His primary professional focus was on aesthetics and philosophy of art, particularly visual art.

The class offers condolences to his daughters Carolyn Brown and Diane B. Perry.
