At Princeton he roomed at Lockhart and Brown, majored in economics, and was active in the Pre-Law Society and Court.

From 1943 to 1946 he was in the Army, serving in the European and Pacific theaters. He graduated in 1949 and became a lawyer and a partner in the firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.
