Christian D. Lebey ’48

“David,” as he wished to be called in his native Atlanta, died April 16, 2011.

He was a graduate of McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn. At Princeton he dined at Cloister, played in the Princeton Tigers dance band, and graduated with honors in English.

David established his business life in the shadow of home plate — that is to say at the site of Braves stadium. His first career was as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal, where he was a colleague of Ralph McGill. He was both a sports editor and a feature writer for Atlanta magazine.

Later he returned to his father’s firm, C.D. LeBey & Co., as a mortgage banker in the growing commercial real-estate market. Eventually he became a real-estate appraiser and investor. He was active in local civic and business organizations.

David was proud of being a “Buckhead Boy.” The first David LeBey served in Lafayette’s army in Savannah during the American Revolution. Our David was the quintessential Southern gentleman.

David is survived by his wife of 36 years, Barbara; his daughter, Pamela; son Daniel ’87; and four grandchildren. He was a loyal and active Princetonian and will be sorely missed.
