Jon H. Sanders ’64

Jon died Oct. 3, 2021, in Rome, N.Y.

He graduated from Metuchen (N.J.) High School, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He followed his brother David ’59 to Princeton, entering with the Class of 1965. Majoring in mathematics, he was recognized as a University Scholar and was able to skip his sophomore year, becoming a member of the Class of 1964. Following graduation with honors, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale in 1969.

He was an ardent enthusiast for mathematics and its applications to technology and served as chief scientist at PAR Technology before starting his own business, J.H.S. Consultants in Rome, N.Y. His primary focus in mathematical research was in discrete mathematics, specifically in the fields of Ramsey theory and matriod theory. As a teacher and tutor, he helped students at all levels: from assisting fifth graders to learn elementary arithmetic and algebra to coaching Ph.D. candidates.

Jon loved to sing and play guitar and even attended the original Woodstock festival in 1969. His other interests included “Golden Age” cinema, science-fiction literature, and rooting for the Yankees.

Jon married Annette Vidzar in 1980, and they had three children, Matthew, Brian, and Jessica. To them and their wider family, the class offers its belated condolences.
