Lawrence C. Wood ’57

Larry died Jan. 30, 2026. The son of Francis C. Wood 1922, and nephew of C. Tyler Wood Jr. 1921, he came to Princeton from the Haverford School. Larry majored in biology, and he was president of the Pre-Medical Society. A numeral winner on the freshman squash team, he later joined Quadrangle Club, for which he played on numerous intramural sports teams, and he sang in the Chapel Choir and the Glee Club.

Following graduation he earned a medical degree at Penn, had an internship at the University of Penn Hospital, and a residency at University of Virginia Hospital. While in medical school he married Emma M. Hollingsworth, and they had two children, Lawrence Jr. and Clinton. Then came service as an internal medicine specialist at the U.S. Army Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where he attained the rank of captain.

After his military service, Larry completed training and performed research at Boston City Hospital. He left research to become a clinician in the thyroid unit at Mass General Hospital. After a divorce, he married Shirley Jacobsen and they had one child, Marianna. He founded the Thyroid Foundation of America, founded and served as president of the Thyroid Federation International, and helped to found Internal Medicine Associates.

Larry published two books, Your Thyroid: A Home Reference, and a biography of his father, The Life and Legacy of Francis C. Wood, M.D. For recreation and after retirement he loved fishing and sang with numerous church and secular choirs.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his former spouse, Emma; his sister, Elizabeth; and his three children and their families.
