Michael L. Monheit *88

Mike died Feb. 6, 2026, of cancer in Chevy Chase, Md. He was 79.

Born Oct. 4, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he received his B.A. from UC Berkeley in 1976 and earned a Ph.D. in history from Princeton in 1988. His dissertation topic was “Passion and Order in the Formation of Calvin’s Sense of Religious Authority.” His adviser was Anthony T. Grafton.

A specialist in early modern European history, Mike taught at Michigan State University from 1989 to 1991, then joined the faculty of the University of South Alabama in Mobile, where he remained until retiring in 2014. He taught courses on the Reformation and Renaissance, and his research interests included the formative years of the Protestant reformer Jean Calvin, Eucharistic conflicts in the early Reformation, scriptural and legal interpretation in the Renaissance and early Reformation, and the emotional dimension in history.

Mike is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane Garden; his daughter, Hannah Garden-Monheit; and grandsons, Jules and Dov Martyn.
