Richard G. Long ’49

Richard, a devoted public servant, scholar, and lifelong learner, died March 8, 2026, at his home. He was 98.

Born Dec. 30, 1927, in Chicago, Richard majored in political science at Princeton then earned an M.A. from Johns Hopkins in 1954. He served as a crypto analyst for the Army from 1950 to 1952 in the U.S. and Japan. In 1955, Richard met and married Anne Priscilla Alling, enjoying 71 years of marriage; she died Jan. 11, 2026. In 1956, he joined the Foreign Service, serving nearly 25 years in Pakistan, Algeria, France, and Washington, D.C.

After retiring from the State Department in 1980, Richard worked at the Pentagon, then earned a Ph.D. in political science from George Washington University in 1995. He taught political science courses at several colleges before retiring to Myersville, Md.

Richard was an avid naturalist, hiker, and golfer, enjoying the outdoors well into his 90s. He was also an avid reader and followed national and global politics throughout his life. He is survived by four children, Conrad Long, Kathryn Larson, Barbara Long-Bonadio, and Nathan Long; one grandchild, Harvee Bonadio; and two nephews, Craig Long and Steve Long.
