Thomas G. Gallatin Jr. ’73

Tom was born in Manhasset, N.Y. He attended the Brooks School and then followed his father, Thomas Gallatin Sr. ’37 to Princeton.

At Princeton, Tom dined at Colonial Club and was active in the Student Volunteers Council. Sophomore year he roomed with Gary Scharff, Fred Larson, Howard Chatzinoff, Richard Dahab, Kevin Ashley, Bob Noto, Dave Elkind, Bruce Malashevich, and Michael Hammaker. He majored in religion and philosophy and wrote his thesis under the direction of professor Malcolm Diamond. It was also at Princeton that Tom met his future wife, Patricia McSweeney ’72.

After graduation Tom and Patricia married in 1976, and Tom earned a law degree from Syracuse in 1977. Tom became a partner at Mudge, Rose, Guthrie, Alexander & Ferdon and then a partner at Latham & Watkins. He was last with Toshiba America as senior vice president and general counsel.

In his later years Tom was part of a Zoom group of former Dodge-Osborne classmates, including his freshman year roommate Rick Cagan.

Tom was an avid and skilled yachtsman and was a member of several yacht clubs, including the New York Yacht Club. He was a descendant of Albert Gallatin, secretary of the treasury under President Thomas Jefferson, and of Elbridge Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and vice president of the United States under James Madison 1771.

Tom’s intelligence, humor, warmth, and kindness touched all who knew him. The class extends its sympathy to his wife, Patricia, and his sister, Jean Scatuorchio.
